ABSTRACT:

English teachers today are challenged to look beyond strictly linguistic goals and identify broader, “supra-linguistic” evidence of learning—skills like initiative, resilience, empathy, and critical thinking that students develop through active engagement in the ESL classroom. This plenary explores how educators can pinpoint these intangible indicators of growth, cultivate them effectively, and integrate them into the ESL learning model. Drawing on real-world examples, we will discuss various ways we can observe and develop this type of learning in our students. By recognizing and nurturing these essential 21st-century competencies, language teachers not only shape stronger communicators but also empower students to succeed in life.
